Come meet the modern day Rosie the Riveter and friends at the Hwy 50 Missouri Flat overpass Workers Over Billionaires visibility event on Labor Day, September 7, from 9:00 to 11:00 am and support workers.

Rosie the Riveter was fictional, but her inspiration was historic. During the tumult of WWII, Rosie united not just women but the entire working class. Their work supported troops overseas with weapon production, kept the wheels of commerce turning, the home fires burning, and proved what Americans accomplish when they unite.

The memory is especially fresh as we mourn the loss of a true Rosie Riveter, Jeanne Gibson, a longtime member of California Retired Teachers Association, who passed at 100+ years. Jeanne helped build Navy destroyers as a welder, and later dedicated her career to education and sharing the story of the Rosies.

El Dorado County’s modern day Rosies will be demonstrating their support of workers at a time when most workers are struggling to make ends meet while the wealthy 1% hold over 30% of our nation’s wealth. It is a time to protest this inequity. Tax cuts have benefited billionaires at the same time that essential programs: health care, food security, and veterans benefits have been cut for workers. On top of that the cost of purchasing food and other necessities has risen.

Just as in Rosie’s day, women often make critical decisions -- pay bills, track grocery prices, worry about health insurance, and fear for their children’s security. They echo Rosie’s pledge, WE CAN DO IT! And WE VOTE!
