The celebration begins at 11 a.m. with the rededication of the plaque honoring Dr. James E. Church at the Lake Tahoe Dam. Known as the "Father of Snow Survey," Dr. Church developed the method for measuring the water content of snow — a technique still used today throughout the western United States. His groundbreaking work transformed water forecasting and snow hydrology. He also played a significant role in the founding of the Nevada Museum of Art.

Special guest speaker Jeff Anderson, hydrologist and Water Supply Specialist with the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service Nevada Snow Survey Program, will share Dr. Church's lasting impact on snow science. Anderson continues Dr. Church's legacy by measuring snowpack throughout the Tahoe Basin each winter and maintaining the SNOTEL weather station network that provides critical water supply data throughout the region.

Members of Dr. Church's family, along with representatives from TCPUD and TCDA, will also participate in the ceremony.From 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., visitors can enjoy free admission to three of Tahoe City's historic museums as part of the Placer County Heritage Trail. Free admission includes that of the Gatekeeper's Museum Open House featuring refreshments and live music by Old Souls. There will also be a book signing by author Kayla Anderson. Freed admission also includes the Watson Cabin Museum and SNOW museum. 

From 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., the Gatekeeper's Museum will host a special exhibit highlighting Dr. Church's personal papers, photographs and historic snow surveying records in partnership with the University of Nevada, Reno Special Collections and University Archives. The celebration concludes with a free Historic Walking Tour at 1 p.m., led by Mountain Town Walking Tours. The tour is full but you can add your name to the waitlist. Additional free walking tours will be offered on Tahoe City Day on Aug. 8 at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m.
