AUBURN, CA (MPG) - As Placer County prepares to host another free medication take-back event on April 25, local agencies are reminding residents that safe, free disposal options are available year-round through permanent drop boxes and mail-in services.

Permanent drop boxes: Dozens of free drop box locations are available across Placer County, many at local pharmacies. Residents can use the  searchable database to find a convenient site nearby.

Mail-in disposal: Free mail-in options are available for both medication and sharps/lancets. To request a pre-paid, pre-addressed mail-back package, complete the online form or call (844) 4-TAKE-BACK. Instructions are included with all mail-back services.

Keeping unused or expired medications at home can increase the risk of accidental poisoning or misuse, while improper disposal -- such as flushing or throwing them away -- can harm the environment.

In addition to promoting these year-round services, community partners will continue hosting biannual take-back events. The next event is scheduled for Saturday, April 25, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Residents are encouraged to bring medications in their original containers and to cross out or remove any personal information.

Local law enforcement, in collaboration with youth organizations, utilities, public health agencies and schools, will host collection sites throughout the county -- from Roseville to North Lake Tahoe -- accepting prescription and over-the-counter medications, veterinary drugs and vaping devices (with batteries removed).
