TRUCKEE, CA (MPG) - Thousands of U.S. veterans struggle to navigate the complex and often frustrating process of filing for disability benefits. A new California-based startup, AIJoe, is changing that using artificial intelligence to make the process faster, more accurate, and far more affordable. Founded by Army veteran Erik Menezes, AI Joe combines advanced technology with personal guidance to help veterans prepare stronger claims and access the compensation they’ve earned.
“This process has become a business for many, with some companies charging up to $20,000,”Menezes said. “With AI Joe, we’re keeping costs reasonable and eliminating the mistakes that can cost veterans the assistance they need and deserve.”
Menezes’ inspiration came from his own experience navigating the Department of Veterans Affairs system.
He served as a Forward Observer in Afghanistan from 2007 to 2011, and in the Montana and California National Guard from 2016-2024. After returning to civilian life, Menezes faced his own battle with physical injuries, PTSD and anxiety.
Following years working as a mountain guide and later in the medical device industry, he reached a breaking point thatl ed him to seek care and, ultimately, a new purpose.
“Military folks are wired to handle pressure, but that rewiring doesn’t shut off when we come home,” Menezes said. “Once I got the help I needed, I realized how many others were struggling silently. That’s when I decided to do something about it.”
With AI Joe, veterans share their service history and medical background, and potential benefit options are quickly identified. The platform draws from clinical studies and case data to support claims, generating a clear strategy for the next steps.
This includes producing a Nexus letter at no additional cost, and without requiring any additional visits to the doctor. These letters are the key piece that connects a veteran's disabilities with their service.
“Our system ensures that every claim is accurate and well-supported,” Menezes said. “We prepare all the necessary documents veterans need to submit a fully developed claim and we stick with you throughout the whole process. Denials and rebuttals are a partof this fight and we will never limit the amount of help we provide.”
Menezes emphasized that even small missteps including a missing form, unclear wording, or incomplete documentation can cause costly delays or disappointing denials.
“No one asks for help when life is easy,” he said. “We’re here to make sure that no veteran is left behind. I just want to help them get back on track with the treatment and assistance they really need and deserve.”
