TAHOE CITY, CA (MPG) - Placer County’s Tahoe City Complete Streets Improvements Project was one of six transportation or transit improvement projects to receive funding from the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency last week at their governing board meeting.
The project, a collaborative effort with Caltrans, was awarded $1.4 million toward the estimated $2 million cost of construction.
It’s intended to improve pedestrian safety and circulation at the intersection of North Lake Boulevard and Grove Street in Tahoe City, including signalization and accessibility upgrades.
Placer County has hired a consultant team to work toward project approval, complete the initial environmental documentation and perform preliminary engineering in accordance with Caltrans requirements. The project has previously received $254,000 from a Federal Highway Administration Surface Transportation Block Grant, along with $500,000 from Placer County’s Traffic Mitigation Fee Program. Additional funding is anticipated to be needed before construction can begin.
“We’re pleased to receive this funding from Tahoe Regional Planning Agency because this intersection experiences a significant volume of pedestrian activity, traffic and congestion,” said Placer County Department of Public Works Deputy Director Jared Deck. “We hope to begin construction for this project in 2026.”
In all, Tahoe Regional Planning Agency awarded $11.4 million in federal and state funding this year through the agency’s Regional Grant Program to improve safety and outdoor recreation access and reduce vehicle miles traveled in the Lake Tahoe Basin.
In its dual role as Tahoe Metropolitan Planning Organization and Regional Transportation Planning Agency, Tahoe Regional Planning Agency allocates federal and state transportation funds every two years to priority projects listed in Connections 2050, the Regional Transportation Plan. Each project will advance regional goals for safer roads, cleaner air and water, and improved transit services, ensuring that people can travel to work and popular recreation areas without a car.
