About "The Job of Songs"
In Doolin, an isolated village on Ireland’s windswept western coast, a community of musicians seek joy and connection through music as they face a modernizing world. In the vibrancy of pub life, these tight-knit neighbors revel in the passion and history of their traditional folk songs, using music as a thread connecting generations.
Once a remote collection of thatched cottages, Doolin is now on the tourist trail thanks to its breathtaking scenery and uninterrupted tradition of bar-room “sessions” in which all comers are welcome to pitch in with whatever musical talent they have. Irish singer-songwriter Luka Bloom breaks down the function of music in society as it plays out in Ireland, “the job of songs” is to “entertain, touch, to move and spark memory.”
Sponsored by Mike Holmes, this warm, intimate documentary celebrates Doolin and Ireland’s musical history through the performers who keep traditional Irish music alive, who sing and play and relate the history of the music, the songs that are mostly passed down “from the ancestors.” Stretching back further than the Irish famine and the subsequent waves of emigration, this melodic heritage draws on what some here believe amounts to a millennium of orally transmitted music.
