AUBURN, CA (MPG) - Come out to Hotel Vista Sierra on Oct. 9 at 7 p.m. for a Auburn State Theatre’s screening of documentary film “Maestra, followed by a Q&A with three local maestras.
This documentary features five incredible women from around the world who gathered in Paris for ‘La Maestra,’ the only competition in the world for female conductors, boldly breaking glass ceilings in the male-dominated world of orchestral conducting. A Q&A with local maestras, Matilda Hofman, Stephanie Sugano and Shannon Devir follows the film.
Sponsored by Stephanie Snyder and Krystyna Trzepla, "Maestra" shows the world the singular talent that unites the women and which, for far too long, has been considered the pursuit of men only. Mothers, daughters, rebels and leaders each took to the stage to compete over four days.
These compelling characters include a mother from Athens, determined to show her young twins that anything is possible; a Ukrainian doing all she can to focus on her art and the competition in front of her while Russia invades; a Polish student just starting out; a newlywed American grappling with the decision to start a family; and a French immigrant returning to the city that closed its doors to her many years ago. Personal stories of survival, passion and perseverance are woven together with the drama and excitement of this one-of-a-kind event.
The struggles and triumphs of the gifted artists in "Maestra" offer a microcosm for the challenges faced by women in every industry and in every walk of life, and provide valuable insights into how we may conduct ourselves as we create a new movement for a more equitable future.
Doors open at 6 p.m and the film begins at 7 p.m.. The film’s run time is approximately 1 hour and 28 minutes with a Q&A to follow.
