PLACER COUNTY, CA (MPG) - The North Tahoe Shared-Use Trail moved one step closer to completion this week. On Tuesday, the Placer County Board of Supervisors approved plans for Segment 1 of the North Tahoe Shared-Use Trail and authorized the director of Public Works to advertise for construction bids of $8,469,302 with amendments up to $210,000.

When complete, the Segment 1 project will provide a 2.5-mile section of paved trail connecting the North Tahoe Regional Park in Tahoe Vista to Carnelian Bay. In totality, the trail will connect Tahoe City and Kings Beach via a 6-mile-long paved Class 1 trail.

The project is funded by a $1.8 million surface transportation block grant and a $550,710 state carbon reduction program grant. An additional $1.2 million was invested last April through a California Tahoe Conservancy climate resiliency program grant and $5.5 million in transient occupancy tax funding from the TOT-TBID Dollars at Work program through partnership with the North Tahoe Community Alliance.

By long-standing county policy, all transient occupancy tax revenue collected in eastern Placer County is reinvested to benefit eastern Placer County.

Segment 1 is one of three projects to complete the North Tahoe Trail Project. Segment 1 will connect North Tahoe Regional Park to Carnelian Bay, providing an alternative transportation option for residents and visitors. Segments 2 and 3 are projected to complete the connection to Dollar Creek Trail.

“We’re excited to move forward with this project and give our residents and visitors more recreation opportunities and encourage people to get out of their personal vehicles,” said Placer County project manager Andy Deinken. “It’s one part of a larger effort to provide alternative transportation options and outdoor recreation facilities in North Lake Tahoe.”
